Easy Backpacking Dinner Recipes
what's up guys, on today's video i'm gonnashow you what i carry inside of my cook kit when i go backpacking. so stick around! firstoff what i use to eat with is a light my fire spoon, fork, knife combo, little spork. orwhatever they call it. i just like the size of the spoon. i like how smooth. i like howeasy it is to clean. nothing really sticks to it because it is plastic. it is prettyindestructible. i mean i can throw it and not worry about it. my entire cook kit weighs453 grams or 1 pound exactly. or 16 ounces. whichever one you want to go with. with thespoon, it weighs, 16.55 ounces, 468 grams or 1 pound. so yea. i use a pot cozy wheni am cooking. it makes my cooking more efficient. and i burn as much fuel when i'm cooking.but once we get inside of this i'll explain
how i use this a little bit more. but firstthat's my pot cozy. my cooking pot is a gsi pinnacle soloist. i really like that it holdstwo cups of water with no problem. it is really efficient with cooking just because, i don'tknow, it is just a awesome pot. it is light weight, it is none stick. really like thatfeature. and i just, just like it. it fits perfect in my bag. i just have no complaintsabout it. in fact i have two of them, one for me and one for my girlfriend. and we bothcarry one of these when we go backpacking. i like the lid has a strainer on the top here.ill show you right here. it also has another strainer over here. so um, if i'm cookingnoodles or anything like that. i can pour it out, you know strain it, whichever i needto do. just like that. so inside of my cook
kit, i carry a packable towel. this is oneof those cheap ones from rei. that comes with the little bag. it is easy to clean my potwith, i can wipe my mouth, i can wipe my spoon. just grab a pot if it is really hot. justreally like having this little packable towel. next in my cook kit, i have a small bottleof dr. bonner biodegradable soap. i haven't used this to often, so honestly i don't reallyknow why i still carry it. but when i have had to use it, i have been really glad thati have had it. so i just continue to carry it. next i carry a small bottle of olive oilthat i carry rei squirt container. i just like carrying olive oil. you just never knowwhen you are going to need it. adds extra calories to meals after a long day of hikingwhen you need those extra calories. you can
put your pot to have things not stick. sosay i went fishing and caught a fish or something. this just comes in handy so i carry it. thisstays in my pot at all times. next i carry two lighters. i carry four on me at all timeswhen i am backpacking. one in my pocket, one in my front hip belt pocket and then two inmy cook kit. i am a firm believer in having multiple, multiple lighters. because you justnever know when somethings going to happen. this is one that has been with me forever.i call it smoke, it has not failed me yet. but it also has tony stewart on it, so thatis why i named it smoke. old smokey. and then i just carry a cheap one. next up i carrya small bit of aluminum foil. i carry this little small piece right here. as a vaporbarrier for my alcohol stove that i carry.
it makes my stove a little more efficient.keeps the stove on the cold ground, reflects the heat back up. just my personal opinion,i feel like i have to prime my stove less of a time if i have this. so i always carryit. and then i carry a windscreen made from the bottom of a turkey roasting pan. you knowthe kind you get at the dollar tree. and i just cut it. i really like this for my windscreen because it is a lot more heavy duty than the regular piece of aluminum foil. soi just highly suggest getting one of these. i also carry a little binder clip, to clipit together. next i carry a little fancy feast alcohol stove. which i carry in a little smallbag. which i actually used a drill to make all these holes with. i have several of theseand to me this is my most efficient one. it
boils water quicker than the others that imade. i like carry a small alcohol stove just because of the fact it is lighter, it is prettydurable and it is quite. that is one thing with the pocket rocket, you have the *loudwhooshing noise*. you don't have that sound here. it is quite and you can actually enjoythe sounds of nature. which is part of the reason you are out in the woods. so i justcarry a alcohol stove in a little plastic baggy. and that is what i boil my water with.lastly i carry the gsi soloist cup that comes with the cook kit. i really enjoy cookingmy breakfast out of this over this, just because this is easier to clean than this. i alsolike having hot chocolate, coffee, fruit drinks out of this. so i just carry it. it is worththe weight to me. it is also a easier way
to keep my stuff stored inside of the cookkit. so now that you know what is in my cook kit. what exactly does it look like when iam cooking. well i will show you. first i put my little aluminum foil down that is thevapor barrier. then i put my fancy feast alcohol stove down. i will put about a ounce of fuelinto it. i have found that that usually boils two cups of water. and that is about as muchfuel as i need per meal. then i will put my wind screen down. after my stove has has finishedpriming. it usually takes about 15 seconds, which just lets it heat up. then i will putmy pot down, then i will put my lid down. and then i will go about doing whatever ineed to do while this is cooking. just depends on how long it takes. say my water is rollingand boiling, vibrating, going nuts! i will
pick up the pot, pull this off. then i willgrab my pot cozy. drop this into it. drop this over it. and then i will set this tothe side. forget about it for awhile, usually i let my meal cook for about 15-20 minutes.inside of here it saves me a lot of fuel doing this method. and by time i get my meal outof here, my meal will be pipping hot. so i highly suggest you make one of these. in facti will make a video on how to make a pot cozy at some point. for my alcohol stove, i useheet in the yellow bottle as my fuel. it is really reliable, it burns hot and it getsthe job done. so while backpacking, i do not carry it in the big yellow bottle. i knowlots of people do. i just don't need this much fuel. so what i normally do is i transferwhat i think i'll need for a whole trip into
this big container. usually i need about 3-4ounces a day. i like to carry 4, just in-case i want to make hot chocolate or coffee. orsomething of that nature. help me get a fire started at the camp fire. so i carry whati need for the entire trip in this big bottle. for every meal i carry about an ounce of fuelin this little squirt bottle from rei. so what do i mean, that i carry each meals amountof fuel in here? what i do is i will pour each meals amount from here into here. soat every meal i just open this up, squirt my amount into my fancy feast stove. i knowthat it is a direct measurement. and i'm not wasting fuel that way. once i empty this out,i will refill it and it is good for the next meal. i just like this system. and that ishow i do it. i carry my fuel inside of a little
ziploc bag. so if it was to leak, i like havinga option of you know a little added security. i get all of the air out of it. once i haveall of the air out of it, this little baggy. i will press it up a little more. and i havethis old sun-glass pouch, protector. and i like putting it in here. that way it is doubleassured that is something was to happen, that it is a little more secure. i'll put the bagback in. and close it up. that's what i carry my fuel in inside of my pack. hopefully thisvideo answered a few questions about what i carry inside of my cook kit. everythingthat you see here pack up into this small thing. except for the fuel and the spoon.these will go inside separate places inside my pack. on next week's video, i'm going toshow you how to make a fancy feast alcohol
stove. so you do not want to miss that. subscribeif you already haven't. hit the likety, like button. it lets me know you like what i'mputting out. comment down below with any comments or suggestions. follow me on facebook, itis backpacking ben. follow me on instagram it is @backpackingben and follow me on twitterit is @benearpphoto. until next week, later guys! later
