>> did you even look in here? is it connected? >> that anxiety has a little bit to do withthe air conditioner. it has a lot to do with daytona. these guys are on the edge of their nervesanyway. they look in the rear-view mirror and seethat tiny spoiler back there. they know how intense the drafting is goingto be, how slick the track is going to be. >> i think when you look at this particularrace and come in and you have that first problem, it's aggravating more than anything.
i think as the race goes on, he'll becomea little more comfortable, especially after he starts to sweat a little bit more. >> the wait is over. green flag in the air on the 2017 first careerpole jumping out front. >> is that kid ready to race or what, greatjump by jones. >> 48 car's got a lot of speed. ran for rookie of the year last season. 15th winner here ryan reed outside, with thehelp from another ford, that would be brad keselowski.

>> i got bad news for him, i think this thing'sgoing to stay shook up today. i think the lines will move back and forth. i think you'll have to be around some of theyoung guys. seems like there are a lot more young guysthan old guys. >> meanwhile, the toyota is deeper in thefield. what's eric jones' group thinking? >> you've got the 0 up in front of us. >> just go up? >> that's the plan i want to hear my driversay, i don't like my surroundings, i'm just
going to leave my surroundings and go forward. >> why not? >> they aren't worried about points, they'rehere to win a race. >> he's 27th right now. how many times last year when he wasn't wreckedwas he outside the top 25? >> maybe none, right? >> it's harder for the joe gibbs racing tobe in the back. >> we're going to put lap eight on the boardin the opening stage. as we come back to the start/finish line, the control car, brad keselowski inside lane
as the green waves once again here at daytona. >> he's going to drive around brad keselowskiand get to the lead. i'm sure he'll drop to the bottom now. >> the outside three cars were connected verywell all the way to turn one. >> oh, trouble. got one in the wall back there. the 44 of gordon went wide. no caution yet. a lot of contact there.
gordon was running in the 24th position. we'll see if he can get out of harm's way. we'll stay green. back at the front brad keselowski reestablishinghimself with help from ryan reed. kasey kahne continues to lead the train. >> yeah, i think obviously, you have one ofthe best restrictor plate racers up front. let's see what happened to the 44 here. >> oh. is that a sign of what's to come, loose racecars?
denny just got sideways up in the corner andovercorrected into the outside wall he went. >> it definitely has the look of loose there, for sure. but it almost looks like he had a tire goingdown or something going wrong before we really pick it up there. >> i know he had help from the wall. but that could have been a lot worse. pretty ffort by him to keep that thing fromshooting back across the track. >> you've got the fords working together downlow. outside, teammate kasey kahne with a pushfrom elliott sadler.
and denny gordon in an accident, didn't goto the garage. he's on the five-minute clock. we'll keep you apprised of how it goes therefor him. >> he needs to get up to minimum speed inorder to keep racing. >> you see brad try to move up. kasey had a little bit of a side draft. his teammate, elliott sadler, right behindhim. >> look at brad keselowski fall back throughthe middle. >> saving grace might be another ford.
that's the blue 98 of aric almirola who pickedhim up. brad has not been in the middle of the meszall day long. >> as you see this race go, i think you'llsee a lot of mistakes like that. nobody knows how these lines are going tocome and go. in every lap they make, they learn a littlebit more and a little bit more. i think you're seeing these cars are stillgoing to have pretty good momentum as they get pushed. >> look at the high line getting a run uptop. three wide back at the front and in the back.
>> is reed going to get hung out there? >> i don't think that was a great idea. it's interesting, kevin, you can choose themiddle if you dive into the middle, you can pass. if you get stuck in the middle, you fall straightto the back. everything's circumstantial. that's what drafting is all about. realizing your circumstances and moving yourcar around to take advantage of the air. >> and that depends on the guys around youand the decisions they make.
he left that high lane kind of hung out todry. now they're five car lengths out on the outsidelooking for a hole to get down. >> i know you race every week, and you'reused to this, but when you haven't been out there, like me, in a couple of months, andyou go in the middle of all that mess, you guys are crazy. this side drafting you're doing, you haveto be so precise to pull the guy off one guy and get yourself away from him. how do you make those decisions? when do you think it's worth it to be thataggressive?
>> kind of like everything in fast forward, right? like trying to watch a movie real quick. that's what's happening with these guys. they're getting a little more finesse, a littlebit more comfortable with how hard they can hit the guy in front of them. they're just testing everything out. as you look at we're halfway through thissegment here and one more lap, and these guys are racing harder than i think they have inthe past, just because they know what's coming and they know they want to position themselves.
there's a lot of unknowns. >> we've got to start watching closely, adam, because the tires are losing their goods. they're hot, they've got laps on them. if somebody's going to get loose over thenext few laps, we'll see it. >> i thought the aggression would come inthe second half of the stage. kevin said it, working toward halfway. and these guys already starting to push andshove just a little bit. sadler for junior motorsports on the platetrack last year at talladega, leading them around.
and behind him, brandon jones, haven't saidmuch about our polesitter. got his first pole today. would you believe he led more laps than anyother driver when we went to talladega last year. he has proven he can make it happen out frontin one of these races. >> i agree. i think elliott sadler is over his air conditioningsituation now. >> i think he feels pretty good out therenow. elliott could bracicly be brandon's dad.
that's how far apart they are in age. we won't tell sadler i said that. that's a fact -- he might be older than theguys behind him combined. >> daniel emrick led this race in north carolina. he's your basic short track racer that madeit to the xfinity series. didn't get a win, but so competitive. progressed up to the xfinity series. if you're a local racer, you've got hope. because daniel made it on driving ability.
>> hemric making his first start here. doesn't appear to be fazed by the moment. >> daniel, we were talking in prerace aboutthe 21 and significance. you talk about harvick winning the championshipin 2006, glad to see him back on track. but daniel said this is the best he's everfelt at daytona. his truck never felt great, but he said ifeel like we have a great opportunity with this team and this car. >> the last couple of years in the truck series, last season for brad keselowski racing. made it into the play-offs.
had problems at new hampshire. unable to advance. >> i think that's the difference with a lotof these young guys, in this particular series compared to some of the truck series, maybearca series. you've got a lot of experience around youto lean on. they're telling you what to do and where tostay. >> we todd about daniel hermic. maybe the favorite to win the title, elliottsadler is our leader. >> we talked about the inexperience in thefield.
yes, many talented drivers but a lot of inexperience. he said it's almost like going back to school. he studied who was in what car, and what number, and what the cars looked like because there's so much news as far as the different cars. >> kasey kahne sliding back a bit from theinside row. 17, 18 laps now into the race. he's into the racetrack way too much, alsoasking for clearer information from his spotter, kevin hamlin. >> caution out for the second time today, chris.
that's the 40. 18-year-old brandon hightower that goes fora ride as he enters the tri-oval. running 34th at the time. this gives us an opportunity to update a fewthings. gordon didn't bring out the caution when hehit the wall. went on the five-minute clock, able to getback up to speed. his five-minute clock has been cleared. and brad keselowski has brought back running22nd just before the caution came out, and larry, 13 laps to go in stage one.
how are we managing things from this pointon? >> well, a big deal here is the number ofsets of tires that they have. they only have four sets for the weekend. i heard kevin talking about this. 13 at the end of stage one, but 43 to theend of stage two. if you pit now, you could make it to the endof stage two. i think we're going to see a number of carshere pit. it may just be two right side tires. but the biggest thing is filling up with fuel.
but if you do four, kevin, i think that putsyou in pretty good shape to make sure you don't have to come back the last 60. >> i know from the driver's seat, i wouldask for four. every time i put tires on my car and the sunis shining like it is today, it makes it handle worse. so i would vote to have four. >> free pass under this caution goes to jeffgreen who had the problems earlier. here's a look back that happened to hightowerin turn four. >> that track flattens out in a hurry.
i don't know if he got help or not. that's certainly a really tough place to drivewhen you're on worn-out tires. >> we don't have a real good view of how itstarted. but it looked like he just lost it. and i think if that's going to be the case,it's really going to start showing up when you get to lap 20. when you start putting two tires on, or notires, to go to the end of the next stage, the cars are going to get harder to drive. >> i know the drivers and nascar work reallyhard on the new formats.
i think they're delivering. i know they did last night in the trucks, and even in this race. we talked about strategy and mixing up thefield. think right now, adam, you can make it tothe end of the next segment, but how will these guys decide to balance where they'reat for track position, and what their ultimate goal is. >> i said to you, kevin, if it's green, you'rerunning outside the top 12 or so, do you come down pit road three laps to gain track positionfor the next stage, and you said absolutely i would do that.
there will be a lot of games played underthis new format. the door is wide open for these crew chiefs. >> we're getting ready to see it play outhere. this is what this was all created for. now the games begin. >> coming down here, we'll leave out the questionmarks of coming right before the stage ends. as larry pointed out, this is get you to theend of stage two as far as fuel and get you some new tires. >> austin dillon comes to a stop.
he said his car was tight early on. you can see the chassis adjustment, goingwith the plan we talked about at the beginning of the show. left side tires on the first stop. >> william byron getting his first pit stopin the xfinity series. saying it's a little tight in three and four. >> back on the 19, you can see not a greatentry in the box. much more difficult for the jack man. you can see him trying to get the jack down.
bad angle. going to cost his time, track position. on the racetrack. tough break here for the 19 early on. >> that was the same situation for the 9 ofwilliam byron. got in too close to the wall. >> one of those two have in common, they'reboth rookies. great opportunity under caution to come down. they'll have to rally back when the greenflag goes back in the air.
it continues to be elliott sadler on top. just blew the doors off the competition. now, it's time to blow their tailgates offtoo. by adding the new, more powerful, next-generation,3.5 liter ecoboost engine. and an all-new 10-speed transmission... cranking out more power and acceleration, more efficiency at the pump, and the most torque of any half-ton pickup. this is the ford f-150. boom.
>>> welcome in to the hollywood hotel. 20 laps in to the xfinity season opener atdaytona. the rookies doing a great job on the racetrack, but having trouble getting into the pit boxes. >> you know, this is part of, i think, comingoff a racetrack even under caution at 55 miles per hour, you see william byron in the 9,he slides it. and then it gets into the wall. and then the biggest challenge is his pitcrew can't get to the left side of the car. i this i one thing tra contributed to it,shannon, he's in the very first pit box coming in.
even though you're under caution, pilot rowspeed is still fast 55 miles per hour. that probably hurt him as well. just kind of contributed to the whole thing. >> he was coming in hot like that golf cartup to the hollywood hotel. >> i was in a hurry. >> back up to you, adam. >> thank you, shannon. there's william byron on track, back to 32ndin the running order. >> kevin, we talked about the stages.
if you make a mistake, whether it's on pitroad, or you get a penalty, it's going to hurt you. you're going to not be able to achieve thetop ten and get points. being precise on pit road is crucial. you've got to keep your track position. a mistake will bite you. >> yeah. i think as you go through all this, the mostimportant thing is not make mistakes. don't make mistakes on the restarts, don'tmake mistakes on pit road.
the racing is what it is, and it will allplay itself out. don't beat yourself. >> suarez starting 12th here. >> he's in the 18 this year, but he has thesame crew chief in scott graves. scott told him a little too late that he wantedhim to pit. he was already past the entrance to pit road. but he missed it, so he'll have to wait. >> 14 cars elected not to come down pit road. one of those is daniel suarez, restartingin the 12th position, up front.
elliott sadler, brandon jones, ty dillon andtyler reddick. stop six chevrolets. we get the green with eight laps to go. in the opening stage at daytona. sad der in the outside lane. >> the outside lane is really full out onthese starts. sadler decides he likes the lineup behindhim. that's generally why you pick a certain lane. you see a car behind you, you think that,in this case, his teammate will push him.
and you go that direction. look at that big lead they grand. >> that's twice the outside lane got linedup with the first three or four cars and shot the first two or three guys out there. >> remember that teammate thing i said behindelliott? he decided he needed to be on the bottom. chevrolet teammate, not a company teammate. >> oh! reddick in the 42.
smithley through the grass. gallagher gets a piece of it. >> they're still wrecking. byron. >> kevin, you said it, talk about mistakeson pit road. look where that put byron. >> you have to do all you can to avoid allthis. you never know when it's going to happen. you're safer towards the front.
>> there's spencer gallagher with some seriousdamage. >> jeremy clements. saw at least two rookies involved in that. cole custer, spencer gallagher, both got damaged. if you go to the garage, done for the day. for any one of the cars that go to pit road, you'll immediately be put on the five-minute clock at pit entry. let's listen in and see if we can figure outwhat happened. >> i don't know how bad it is.
maybe a little right rear. but not bad, i don't think. you'll have to tell me. >> wow. brad keselowski lost track position. >> that's half the field that got some damage. they started wrecking off turn two and didn'tstop until they got to turn three. >> damage for jeremy clements. tyler reddick.
the 2 car of austin dillon is back on pitroad. matt, what happened to austin? >> yes, sir, jerry, the right front changer, when he pulled the tire off, it popped out. he took a hammer, beat out the rest of it. now looking inside to see if there's any otherdamage. a lot of grass sucked up inside that whilewell opening for the 2. >> now, they'll have to perform their repairsin less than five minutes, or they'll be out of the race. >> spencer gallagher's truck teammate wonhere last night in the truck series.
his day is going to end early. as is fellow rookie cole custer, climbingfrom his car. he will be done for the afternoon. chris? >> brad keselowski working his way down pitlane. spent a little bit of time in the box. you see a big piece of tape over the rightfront wheel. he thought maybe a little bit of damage tothe splitter. it looked good, just the right rear.
it looked likes the team got it fixed. >> keselowski is away. i saw garrett smithley, austin dillon alsopulling off of pit road here. >> you have to think it was a push gone wrong. trying to help a guy get a momentum, you hithim too hard and around they go. >> watch the 42. >> off the bumper. >> and then they just kept wrecking, adam. i'm surprised they couldn't get them down.
that happened in the front of the field. >> i think what happened there, is the 42was almost going down. it's like the car behind him, the 24, justgot him off-center of the bumper. it just hooked him to the right as he waspushing him. we saw the last thing on lap one last nightof the truck series, a bump draft gone wrong. these guys are trying their best to work theirway through this mess. >> the 42 is tyler reddick, driving for chipganassi. >> one out front. one inside.

ufo! false alarm, eyelash! >>> back at daytona international speedway. we went under caution for the third time thisafternoon when this happened. that has led to a red flag. one of the reasons why, i'm sure nascar wouldlove to get this cleaned up so we can go green to end stage one. only five laps remaining. i'm having a hard time believing we're only25 laps in.
because it feels like we've had so much happenin this season opener for the nascar xfinity series. there's a look at scott lagassie. >> i'm out there. >> i thought i had him squared up. >> not sure what just happened there, to behonest with you. >> so we come up here to the broadcast boothon a saturday afternoon. we just want a little something to work with, right? turns out today we've had a whole lot to workwith, you agree, kevin?
>> it's been pretty exciting so far. i think that wreck is a classic example ofbum per's got a little bit of crown to it. the back bumper has a little bit of crownto it. the 42 started to come down and the 24 hookedinto the bumper and hooked him right. that's easy to do. >> that didn't have anything to do with stageracing. they're packed together. they were just pushing hard to get all theycould get. now the fact that the field is going to bescrambled up because of stage racing is a
bonus for us of the daniel suarez, i missedpit road, that's unfortunate, but he missed the wreck because he missed pit road. there are so many different complexities inthe racing now. i can't wait to see how it all plays out. >> it is in fact better to be lucky than good,100%. >> you'd rather have luck on your side. >> all the guys who play strategy, and dowhat the crew chiefs said they should do, let's pit right now. our fuel window will allow us to get to theend of stage two, establish track position,
everything will be right with the world. and boom, on the restart, the wreck happens. so many of those cars received damage. >> that was a big wreck. now what do you do? do you come to pit road again, change yourstrategy? these guys can't work on their cars. and if you can get that thing fixed, can youstill be competitive. but i think it will be interesting to seewhat these top cars do under this caution.
>> well, the day has been good for many. including rookie of the year contender danielhemric who finds himself inside the top five. >> danny, you worked with a lot of rookies. this one seems to have his head wrapped aroundthis idea of racing. what approach do you take with a young guylike this? >> you know, this kid has definitely got hishead on strong and straight and he knows the direction he wants to go. one heck of a race car driver. we haven't -- obviously this is our firstrace together.
but he's so smart. we've communicated so much through the off-seasonabout this race, and the races coming up. he's just so smart. he watches footage. he does all the stuff that it takes to bea champion already. that's important. we've got to keep him motivated. i don't think that's going to be a problem. and be there at the end of the day today andhe'll have a shot at.
>> handling great in the draft, adam. >> he's doing a nice job. if you're a rookie, you just want to get offto a good start. so far he's done exactly what he needs tobe to be in the game. >> how about if we check in with daniel suarez. what an amazes job he did working throughthat crash. let's see if we can get ahold of him. daniel, it's michael up in the fs1 booth. that was close.
did you think you were going to wreck? >> goes all the way up to the wall and backdown. >> he's conversing with his team about thespeedy dry that's been put down. he's getting an update from his team. we'll try to tap in there in a second andsee if we can get a word from daniel. look at that mess, kevin. how much does that affect the cars. are they going to be loose in that mess? >> they're like vacuum cleaners.
no matter how much you blow it off, the firsttime the cars go through there, you're going to have oil-dry all-you. >> what a move, you can't believe you didn'tget in that wreck. great job. >> hey, mikey. lucky we made it through. >> tell the folks at home what it's like whenyou see a crash like that, and you have to react, and you make the right move. i heard you, woo-hoo!
had to feel good. >> oh, yeah, man, i don't even remember whati said. but i was excited for sure. you know, it was one of those that you don'thave time to think about. you just do it. i don't even know what i did. i guess my brain told my hands and my feetwhat to do. i don't know what happened. it just happened.
>> well, that was great communication betweenthe brains and the hands and the feet. what are the cars handling like out there? i know you didn't pit there. are you still getting a good grip of the road? >> yeah, my car is fine. i feel like my camry is pretty strong actually. i just need to make my way back to the front. it's a little bit tight. but very much the same from being in the raceto right now.
pretty happy with the car. let's see how this race changes with laps. we have so far just a few laps. a lot going on. >> all right. thanks for updating us. we'll check in with you later. >> thank you, mikey. >> i am enjoying it.
it feels good. >> let me ask you guys something. do you remember the first time he came todaytona? >> yes. we talked about that this morning. yeah. >> there were so many mistakes and thingsgone wrong and spinning out. now he's a champion. he's won races.
to me, this is one of the best stories innascar, a kid from mexico city, coming to nascar, becoming a champion, winning races. and here we are talking to him on tv. and he's just one of the nicest guys in thegarage and a great, great story for our sport. >> unbelievable personality. >> just a great story. i mean, where did he come from? when he showed up, troubles in daytona likeyou said, but quickly we learned he knew how to race a car and got better and better.
we want to remind everyone of the situation, when the red flag goes in the air, you can't touch a race car. however, for all these guys who were placedon the five-minute clock, as soon as they were in the accident and the clock started, once they came down pit road, crossed the pit entry line, and in all 16 cars that fitthis cat gore, that five-minute clock started. once the red flag came out, it was paused. with the red flag, they just can't work onit right here. but larry, how much preparation can they donow, off the car, so that when the red is lifted, they are ready to go into action andget up to minimum speed?
>> honestly, i think all these teams are gladto see a red flag. even though you can't work on a car, adam,it gives you an opportunity to make a great plan. for everyone to have an assignment. when i look at this car right here, just remember, you cannot replace any panels unless it's designated pieces that nascar gives it toyou before the race, like the rear bumper cover, deck lid. you cannot replace panels. the only way they can repair this is withbare bond or anything like that.
you can't use aluminum patches, steel patchesor anything. >> they beat the five-minute clock and getback up to minimum speed. that five-minute clock is erased and goneunless they get in another accident. that's the situation for the cars on pit road. for the guys who went to the garage who couldnot drive, they're done. >> the first one to brought out here, cole, good to see you're okay. what did you see in the wreck? >> not much. we were back there.
we were going to try to make our way up there. maybe before the segment. i just saw the 42 get turned. by that time i couldn't see anything fromthere. couldn't go anywhere. i think the 23 came up and just know whereto go. nobody's fault from my point of view, justcouldn't avoid it. it really sucks. i thought we had a really good awesome fordmustang that definitely drafted really good.
and i mean, i think we're definitely goingto strong with ford. and i think we're going to have a good seasonthroughout the rest of the year. >> good to see you're okay. >> austin dillon's tire situation is takento another level. we documented the beginning of the show. he had been docked a set due to illegal compoundingput on the side walls of his qualifying tires before qualifying. now he was involved in that incident. two of his tires, the right side tires havebeen damaged.
gill martin, director of the xfinity program, and rcr is lobbying nascar for two re placement tires, due to the fact that those were damagedin that incident. right now, they're waiting for the call. two goodyear engineers looked at them, theysaid not safe to go back out on the right side tires. >> kevin, you said it earlier today. tires, because there are only four sets forthe weekend, going to be a big issue in this race potentially. for that team, they're seriously behind theeight-ball.
>> i saw the 22 car came in as part of thestrategy as well. he put a set of tires on. he took a set of tires off. then he wrecked. now he had to come in and put another setof tires on, so he's three in. i would assume that the other guys that camein and pitted, most of them are in the same category. so tires are hard to come by right now, mike. >> they are.
they'll be gluing ones back up, so they havea way of making -- understand that they're pretty good at their strategy and what theydo and how it all works out. >> under the red flag at daytona. and the reason, restart, lap 25, watch inthe middle of your screen. 42 of tyler reddick goes outside. with the field bunched up on the restart, nowhere for anyone to go. still onboard with aric almirola. >> watch the job this cat does. the whole world's right in front of him.
around he goes. but no serious damage. >> brad keselowski, led a number of laps early, got shuffled out of the draft, lost track position. he did make a trip down pit road to get damagerepaired. five laps to go in the opening stage whenwe return. what powers the digital world. communication. that's why a cutting edge university countson centurylink to keep their global campus

out. >> the red flag has been out for a significantamount of time, as those guys are continuing to work on the cars. you see the red flag has been lifted rightnow. so that's why you're seeing those guys busy. they have had to stop working on the carsduring the red flag. but now they're working on the car. with edo have some radio from tyler reddickwho is not too happy with that. >> the 24 turned us there?
i went down and talked to them to let himknow that this isn't a truck race. he did that last night. he did the same thing, he never came off ofit. we're all the way up to the 21's bumper. with had nowhere to go. he just turned us around. you're at the mercy of them. he's stuck. >> he said, you think so?
you think he's upset with that guy? >> again, nascar has a rule that you can bump, but you can't push. of course, now, it's too little, too late. because we had 18 drivers involved in thiscrash. >> you see the crews working on those cars. some drivers had to go to the infield carecenter. one of those guys is spencer gallagher. he's with chris neville right now. >> saw that replay there.
you were in the 23 blue and white car. nothing really you could do in that situation. an angry way to start the season? >> you know, god giveth and you take away. you can't get too mad. but it's just disappointing. i saw tyler start to turn in front of me,and all i had time to think was, man, it's going to suck. nothing to do beyond that, but put your handsto your belt and hope for the best.
hate for our gms racing crew, we had a fastcar. these allegiant travel guys deserve better. got the win last night. that will console me a little. hate that we have an early end to the dayhere. just want to thank the guys back home forputting together such a great piece. >> on to atlanta. >> the 62 of brendan gaughan, they workedout who will go over the wall at which time. now, the car chief, he's working on the rightrear corner hammer.

some guys weren't able to make it in on time. they're certainly going to be challenged asthey try to get the cars fixed up and back on the track. >> shannon, we got a report, there were 16cars that went under the five-minute clock. guys that were damaged, came down pit road, and unofficially, 18 drives involved in this accident at lap 25. >> many of these guys could still win thisrace, kevin. i think it's so interesting, the fabricatorsmeticulously mold the metal and they polish and shine.
now they're going to work with baseball batsand tape to make the cars better. that's a way to make clear, but it's alsopossible to win that way because of the draft. >> i think you've got the guys that are toreup a little bit like brad is, a little patch on his door, that's really the only damagehis car has. and then the guys that are tore up prettygood, and reset their five-minute clock. the main priority is to make sure nothing'sgoing to fly off and make sure the tires don't rub so you can make minimum speed. because that's what resets the clock. >> anytime you have to go two pages to seewho's in the wreck, that's not a good thing.
>> that was not only the big one, that wasa long one. it happened from the back straightaway allthe way down into turn three. >> for your ease at home, we did put themin numerical order. now you know who was involved in the crash. brad keselowski among them. he's made a couple of trips down pit road. appears to be ready to go back here. >> the car that got you was actually the 23. it wasn't a lack of effort.
he was just spinning around the track andgot you barely. >> ten-four. i feel kind of lucky. >> that's what it takes. >> nice way to control a guy. he didn't mean to do it. that's exactly what we heard from scott lagasse. we know how upset tyler reddick is. >> what's happening with michael annett, jamie?
>> watching the guys on the clock for thefirst time this year, they maximized that five-minute clock. and as soon as they were finished, it waslike, all right, we're good, we're good! there was a big celebration that they gothim out. you can see how much damage is on michaelannett's car. then that team can come in and they can workon the car as much as they want. no more clocks. one time. he has to reach minimum speed and then they'refree to do what they want.

>> yeah, i think elliott has a little bitof a comfort with kasey back there, knowing he's going to help him get to hopefully asegment win here as we get towards the end of this first one here at daytona. >> kasey kahne is about pushing that 1 carright now. a lot of series regulars inside the top ten. >> big points on the line as we close on theend of stage one. elliott sadler out front in the bottom lane. first car outside his teammate that joinedhim at homestead running for the championship last year.

young guns had issues on pit road. william byron slides into his pit stall. he has to be pushed back. and then we see our first big wreck of theday. >> yeah, one driver made a mistake. scott lagasse in the 24, and the 42, and 18drivers involved in this wreck right here. >> then on lap 29, rookie daniel hemric getsloose and gets into justin allgaier. a hard hit by brandon jones. >> we only have 13 drives that have not beeninvolved in an accident.
>> a lot of guys, 40 cars started this race. jamie little is standing by at the infieldcare center. >> justin allgaier was one of the first carshit there. was there anything on the track that you felt, any speedy dry, anything that led to that? >> i'm not really sure what happened. we were racing hard obviously at the endsof the first segment. we had a really good chevy. we were trying to make our way up to the front. that was a hard hit.
probably the hardest i've ever taken. but i can't thank the guys back at the shopfor building such a great car. when you take a hit like that, and see thedamage that it does to the car, to be able to walk away is really something incredible. we've had a tough week. one of our friends and crew members on ourdirt car got hit at the dirt track a few weeks ago, so he's in the hospital. we wanted to get a better finish for that. to be able to cheer him up.
unfortunately we're going home early. >> glad you're okay, though. >> infield care center, bubba, you were acouple rows back in the replay. anything you could do in the situation? >> not really. probably just biding our time there. i kind of put it in the spot there early. i was leading outside line with elliott behindme. the 88 came up so fast, i just bailed out.
kind of fell back, made our way up throughthere. just crazy. all of us were talking while we had our littlemediation there. crazy how hard some of those guys are racing. but i'm okay. but i've had a couple of those. we're all good. we were making some ground there. thought we had a decent car.
just wanted to make it to the end of the race. can't believe at lap 29 the red flag already. these stages, there is some hype. and some of the drivers are trying to getafter it. but we're okay. having a coke with you, and we'll be goingon to atlanta. >> daniel hemric in the 21, had a great daygoing for the rookie. top five. all of a sudden it was over.
what happened? what did you feel? >> obviously with the red flag, all the oiland everything put down. went back green. felt like we were trying to get to the firstsegment. we got under speed and i just went straight. i got up in the 7. i haven't got to see the replay. as it happened, it was a matter of tryingto gather back up.
just hate that everybody got caught up withus. huge thanks to everybody coming onboard withus. hopefully we can give them the run they deserve. >> chris? >> daniel suarez, looks like you're okay. you had a chance to see the replay right there. what did you see? >> it felt like we were racing too hard. it was too early.
you know? i don't really know what happened exactly. i'll have to see the replay slowly. but i feel like we have to be a little moresmarter. i just feel like it's a long race. and we should be a little bit more sure. >> thanks, daniel. jamie? >> erik jones is seeing that for the firsttime.
how was it out there up to that point? how were the guys racing around you? you were mid pack moving all around. >> we were kind of mid pack most of the daythere. we finally got up close to the front. everybody was really aggressive. obviously at times a little overaggressive. the camry was okay. we had to wait and see, i think, really, ifwe had a shot to win.
we were handling good in the hot conditions. it was slick out there for sure. but sometimes it doesn't work out here. and we did all we could to be aggressive andmake our way to the front, to stay ahead of the wreck. it just didn't work out. >> we'll see erik jones in his first daytona500 tomorrow, shannon. >> glad to see the guys walk out of the infieldcare center. nascar has a dedicated medical staff thattravels to all of the monster energy cup weekends.
new concussion protocols. so certainly good thing for those guys toget checked out. hard racing. aggressive. we knew these stages were going to add a newdynamic to these races. but my goodness. >> these guys have a lot of energy that'skind of been bound up. they haven't been in a race car for severalmonths. this is not the first time we have seen this,in this series at daytona and talladega.
i think kevin was talking during a commercialrace, back in 2001, we only had four or five cars running at the end of that race. i think the biggest thing, the theme i heardfrom all the drivers coming out of the infield care center, we railroad racing for the endof that stage. they know there's regular season points that'savailable there. and if you can win that stage, there is aplay-off point that you can put in your play-off bucket. so i think we've accomplished what we weretrying to accomplish. hard racing from green flag to checkered.
>> i think they'll have to slow it down justa little bit. >> running out of cars. we will go back up to adam. guys, this racing, my goodness, hopefullywe get green soon. >> we had an 18-car pileup and 9-car pileup. where do we go from here, michael? >> i don't think the two wrecks have anythingto do with overaggressive. scott made a mistake. hemric didn't turn when he got into the corner.
it's like larry said, these guys haven't beenin the cars for a while. they made some mistakes and caused big wrecks. it will be interesting to see what we learnedand how we go from here. >> as you look at daytona and come to thisparticular race, this is nothing new. the stages don't have anything to do withit, in my opinion. i have gone down here in the daytona 500 andwrecked 18 or 20 cars by making a mistake. in my opinion, these are two mistakes thatwere made by young guys, and we tore up a lot of race cars. that's plate racing.
>> every race has a different feel and flow. and you guys as drivers always have to makean adjustment. so you put yourself in the best position possible. given where we are with this one here today, how do you go forward and maybe change your approach? >> i don't know, adam. i still think you have to race to win. its "daytona. we talked at the opening about you win a trophyat daytona, that lasts forever, you're a daytona
winner, that's what these guys are all about. imagine what it meant to elliott sadler todrive into victory lane. cook i saw squeeze through the middle alongwith other guys that are looking to get great finishes. i can't wait to see if they can parlay themoves they made in that crash to something special at the end. >> thinking about some of the guys runningup front, elliott sadler leading. you talked about blake cook. you put dakota armstrong up there.
mario inside the top ten. there are some of those that maybe weren'ton our radar coming into today, that now are in positioning not only to score in stageone, but with so many big names eliminated, to really come out with a positive start to2017 when this thing is all said and done. >> they're in position to score an upset. now we have a field that's mixed up betweenwhat we would consider the most competitive cars. but there's a lot less of them. the guys in the back are thinking, you knowwhat, i can go to daytona and win this race.
they can set the tone for the whole year bycoming down here and winning at daytona. >> i won't be surprised if the winning carwhen it gets to victory lane has tape all over it. how cool would that be to stand in victorylane at daytona with your cars half whacked >> a lot of communication going on with themand their teams. is their confidence growing a little bit rightnow? because it's become very much a numbers game. >> i would say for that guy particularly, after that struggle on pit road early, works his way through the middle of that big crash, now he knows he's in a position to do something
special in florida. >> you see the guy parked there above blakecook. the 3 car of ty dillon. >> i bet you some of these cup drivers willride in the back. >> that's exactly what i was thinking. everybody's going to try to get to the backtomorrow. >> we'll go up there and lead them. >> the first four cars is the only safe placeit's been all day. >> like the truck race.
>> that's true. >> let's ask a couple of those cup drivers. is what you've seen the last couple of dayschange your thought process for the big one tomorrow? >> i tell you where i want to be and that'sat the front. i'll race hard and race aggressively to dothat. hopefully it doesn't turn out like this, mike. >> i don't think it's going to turn out likethis. we saw some amazing race in the clash andduel on thursday.
three wide, side by side, late passes forthe win. it didn't work exactly out when denny hamlinpulled off the last pass. but very little accidents. >> we just got a note, the daytona 500 soldout for tomorrow. >> wow!oud runs on intel? i wonder what the other 2% runs on...(carhorn) year this year. let's go out and have some fun today, guys. >> through the grass.
i don't know how bad it is. >> i don't know what just happened there,to be honest with you. we'll have to come fix it a little bit, guys. >> i think every race i've been in has hada red flag. >> we went green. 90 minutes ago here at daytona, for the nascarxfinity series. we've had four cautions, two red flags andcompleted exactly 29 laps. elliott sadler is out front. and one of the drivers who's been beaten upa little bit in this one is brad keselowski.
>> brad, sitting 13th. you've been out in the grass. you've been in the middle of a crash. it's mike and kevin up in the fs1 booth. can you analyze what you've seen today? >> i don't know if my in-car camera is working. i know my view inside the car has been a lotof cautions for sure. i thought we were done, michael, when we werespiping through the grass the first time with the discount tire ford.
the second time with the last show, i sawabout four of them go head-on into the wall in front of me. i was just waiting for them to rebound backoff into me or get ran over from behind. but that didn't happen, so that's good. so we're still going for now. hopefully we'll be there at the end. >> 20 years ago we saw dale earnhardt turnover and get out of his car and get back in and took off. it looked like you were thinking about gettingout.
what was that all about? >> i just wanted to -- with the clock you'vegot to be ready to go with your adjustments to fixes. so i wanted to make sure i gave all the bestintel i could back to my team. they got it fixed up i think pretty good. that's good. i think we're still in contention for thiswin with the discount tire ford mustang. >> kevin, i've been talking up here, we bothbelieve whoever wins this race is probably going to have tape patches on your car ofthe you've definitely got one of sglos this
is like the gladiator/survivor of the bestcar episode. stay tuned. i'm just hoping my wife's back in the buswatching, she set the dvr for an extra hour, because i think we're going to run an extrahour long tonight. >> i know the season-opening truck race wasunder the lights. i didn't realize the xfinity race was underthe lights, but we're working quickly in that direction. let's hear from chris neville. >> jones first pole in the xfinity series, but this is not the way you want to see it
end. good to see you were okay but that was a hardhit. are you feeling okay? a little ginger? >> yeah, that was most definitely the hardesti've ever had. that's just the thing about this place, itcan happen here whether you're in the back, in the front right there. i thought we were going to have a great runright there for us. happy to having next year on the car for theraces.
we have atlanta coming up. >> good to see you okay. >> that is good to see. because that was the hit that really scaredme from the time we saw that accident unfold. >> i think as you look at all these cars thatare tore up, there you see one that's tore up really bad in the front. i think as you look at the things that havehappened, mike, i've just got to believe that that down force that they've taken off theback has come up with different characteristics of how you can push, how you can't push, thingsthat happen like with hemric going up the
racetrack. i've got to believe that those things aremaking these cars drive different and do different things. >> you know how precise you have to be atdaytona and talladega. the way you side draft, and inches apart at200 miles an hour, you misjudge something just a little bit and you'll cause a mess. we saw a couple of mistakes that caused bigaccidents. >> for all these drivers involved in thisaccident, that went to the garage, nascar's new rules say they are done.
if you got damage come down pit road, you'reput on a five-minute clock, you've got five minutes to get it repaired or you'll be eliminatedfrom competition today. reed led laps early in this thing. right now that car looks pretty clean. >> that's great. >> we've got to be close tonight and lastnight. >> that is a great question, i was wondering the same thing. i've never seen that much speed on a racetrack. >> do you think it's like the highway groupwhere they have the big salt shed down in
the infield here with the speed dry? they're going oh need some more. >> i guarantee you they're phoning somebody. >> look, i wish i had a truck load of bagsof speedy dry. look at that green and white flag. you know what that means? that means this opening stage is complete. offer up congratulations to elliott sadler, wins the first stage of 2017. he's going to grab some points.
both regular season and one play-off point. we offer him our congratulations. i'll tell you what, junior motorsports isgetting the hang of this plate stuff. they won two of the three races last yearwith chase elliott winning here at daytona. elliott sadler taking it to talladega. off to a pretty solid start here this afternoon. >> that's a good day right there, especiallywhen you see all the things that are happening in the mirror. just to have a fast car, that's when you reallywant to hug your crew chief and your team
for what they've given you to go out and dobattle with. and elliott is as good as it gets on the bigtracks. he's proving it today. >> first two stages today are 30 laps. the opening stage concludes at lap 30. stage two will conclude at lap 60. and that will put 60 laps on the board forthe final stage of the afternoon, to run to the checkered flag. the race overall, still 120 laps in length,300 miles.
so nothing changed there. >> there you see back in the 13th position, brad keselowski weaving his tires. has he got any left, kevin? >> i don't know if any have any left. so many spinouts and everything we've had, you've got to think some of these guys are wondering how they'll get to the end of therace. >> the discount tires ford. >> dakota armstrong. >> top five as we anticipate pit stops.
elliott sadler, kasey kahne, brendan poole, blake cook. they're going to come down and make stopshere. what do you see, chris? >> kasey kahne, one of the guys out there, got a clean car. pretty happy with his race car, too. when he tuck up underneath somebody, he doeslose a little bit. looks like they're going to do the right side, going around to the left side. >> elliott sadler said there was grass everywhere, across the cowl, you name it. like he was doing yard work.
right side tires. 15 laps on their tires. similar situation for brendan poole. >> ty dillon working with a new crew chief. four tires there. just wanted it to be freed up a bit. the car's overall pretty good. they just want to get up front and stay therethe rest of this race. >> strategy being played out here.
some drivers stayed on track, didn't pit asthe caution comes out. elliott sadler entered as the race leader. two tires on the right side. he was the third driver to come off of pitroad. the winner of stage one. let's tile him up and see what he thinks howhis afternoon is going. >> michael waltrip and kevin harvick up inthe fs1, booth, you hear us? >> yeah, i've got you. >> the race started off a little rough foryou.
heard your cool unit to your helmet broke. had to be tense at the start, about you wow,the first segment had a lot of action and you were able to survive a lot of it. >> yeah, it's all about trying to be aheadof all the action. this chevy was really good yesterday in practice. we were looking for each other today and hegave me a little should have in the restart. we were able to stay ahead of everything. again, just like last year, michael, we'vegot a really good race car. trying to make it to the end.
but we're good to win the first stage andget the bonus championship point. >> hey, elliott, this is kevin. as you have less cars in the race, how doesthat change your strategy and how you approach with the way the lines are moving back andforth? will that slow the lines down as the racegoes on here with less cars? >> well, i think so. i'm sure we're going to get a count of howmany cars are left in the next five minutes after this wreck. but it should slow down the momentum a littlebit, take some energy out of the lines, so
we probably have to be a little bit more aggressiveto make sure we stay up front. you get to the back, i just don't know ifthere's enough turbulence to make it back to the front. we'll have to play it by ear. learn some things. see what we can do here today. main thing is keeping track position and stayahead of the mess. >> all right, man, congratulations on thestage one win. good luck the rest of the way.
>> thanks, guys. have fun up in the booth. >> to give you an idea of how the format works. the caution flag will come out at the endof the stage, but you don't have to pit. elliott sadler's got ground to make up whenwe go green. >>> back live at daytona international speedway. nascar xfinity series on fs1. here's how it went down in the opening stage. two big crashes, a couple of red flags.
one with 18 cars, one with nine cars. 46 minutes of red flag time. the good news for elliott sadler, he was ableto be out front when stage one came to a close. got some pit work here. a handful of drivers stayed out. elliott sadler starts seventh. up front is brendan dpaun and a rookie withproblems in his xfinity debut. here he is up front. we'll see what number 9 can do.
>> if you're rolling, you're happy at thispoint. >> that's exactly right. no matter how much tape's on your car. >> hopefully stage two will be calmer thanstage one. >> austin dillon peaking three wide already. got to make up some ground if you're stuckin the back. >> a little bit of a sleeper today, the 48of brennan poole. with ego back to how good he was last springin talladega. he understands this style of racing.
onboard here with aric almirola. >> i think that's interesting, michael, asyou see those cars come together, and when they separate. it's like two or three car lengths. there are so many less cars left on the racetrack. i think you'll see some momentum when youget three cars coming up on one car like here. i think you'll see a lot of accordion effectbecause there's so much less energy in those lanes. >> ryan reed is right on the back of williambyron.
byron in the number 9 car, can he get to thebottom? yes, he does. are. >> shoved away from reed. pulls down in front of brendon gaughan. you talked about the accordion effect. brad keselowski sneaking up behind ryan reed. he's going to make some ground. >> it really becomes a numbers game at thispoint.
the guy out front, as you see with brendongaughan here, he was out front too far. man, that was close. >> that wasn't close, they hit. it looked like almirola got into gaughan. >> nice little balance of youth and experienceat the front here, huh? >> i just wished i had seen balance. i haven't seen anything balanced so far. i've seen aggression. >> watch this.
these guys are just so aggressive. >> would you believe that brad keselowskihas been put on the five-minute clock for the damages repaired? he's obviously back up to speed like everyoneis after that last accident right now. keselowski now being scored in the third position. and elliott sadler, who won that opening stage, came down pit road. those guys stayed out, lost track position, but that 1 car appears to be strong coming in the outside lane. >> he talked about his buddy kasey kahne, got kasey kahne in his mirror, to get to the
front earlier. but who's behind him now. >> you know who hasn't left kasey kahne'smirror is the 34 car. >> poole has to find some friends. reddick is no longer a big factor here. he has to find some other chevrolets to draftwith. even though he's young, working with a guylike kasey kahne, i'm sure that trust continues to build as this race goes on. >> that's the thing that you have to do.
you have to build trust. you have to find somebody that you can workwith. and sometimes, usually, those things justhappen as the day progresses. >> shouldn't be surprised brendan dpaun isout front. that will bring out the caution. first time in our second stage, fifth timeoverall today. >> i think you mentioned tyler reddick mightbe ready to receive the free pass. >> i think you're right. scored in the 23rd position.
involved in that accident earlier when hewas tapped by scott lagasse. >> they did an amazing job of getting thatcar tuned up. he was faster than the leaders. so now he's going to get back on the leadlap, maybe to be a player. >> i almost wrote him off when i spoke, i'mglad i changed my wording on that. >> looks like probably some damage, kevin, from elier contact and rubbed the right front fender. >> i saw somebody smoking, and i thought itwas probably his car and his tire hitting that fender.
and that's the result of it. >> benny gordon showing 27th. i'm surprised as we get confirmation thattyler reddick does get the free pass, i'm surprised we have 26 drivers that are withinone lap of the leader. and with tyler reddick going back to the leadlap, there's three guys that will be one lap down. when you figure that we've got 23 guys onthe lead lap, with all the carnage we have seen early in this race, a real tribute tothese guys that go over the wall and fix them. >> especially under the pressure that they'rewith, with this five-minute clock.
when you look at that 42 car, that's probablynot the way they would have fixed it in the past. but they fixed it the most efficient way. it stuck straight up in the air. but he's still in this race. that's what you have to do, you have to neverquit and always try to get the most out of your day. sometimes it works out better than others. >> benny gordon did go to the garage.
he's retired for the afternoon. kevin with us in the booth this weekend. next week double dipping at atlanta, makinghis xfinity debut for stewart haas racing saturday afternoon. cup car on sunday. we have looked at the weather forecast, andit looks really good. we're going to celebrate that and tell everybody, join us, a doubleheader on saturday with xfinity, and trucks, and then on sunday, 500 milesfor the monster energy nascar cup series. >> how much do you like driving the atlantaspeedway.
>> i'm going to be on the bottom. we've won three out of the last four racesthere. it's been a great racetrack for us. this will be the last time on that particularpavement. and i saw that weather forecast. i've been keeping an eye on it. it looks like low of 0s. it's going to be a great weekend. >> maybe cool mornings, but that's okay.
campfire around on the infield to make youfeel fresh. as the afternoon continues, things will heatup and we'll see some really good racing at atlanta motor speedway. one of the great venues we go to, embracingthem next weekend down in georgia. the pits are open here. brendan gaughan is the race leader. brad keselowski in the top five. brennan poole is sixth. rookie william byron is eighth.
aric almirola ninth. austin dillon rounds out the top ten. one-third of the way through. our second stage here at daytona. kevin, we were so excited in the off-seasonto sign you up to be part of the fox sports family. xfinity races and truck races. we'll see you in the studio monday for "nascarrace hub" at 6:00 p.m. eastern time.
beyond all those duties, what other thingsdo you have going on with the foundation? >> we've got the kevin harvick foundation. our recent project of bringing the jay cohenfield in florida. we've had a great partnership with the calrip kin sr. foundation to make these happen across the country. we have a great group of people and fans thatsupport the foundation. we've been able to hopefully change the pathof several kids' lives. it's all about helping kids. we're trying to give them opportunities thatthis may not otherwise have.
and with this particular project, the safeplace to go out and spend some time on a baseball field. you can do whatever you want down there, michael, you can jog, play football, baseball, whatever you want to do. but a safe place to play. >> we didn't talk about this before, so youcan bail me out if i screw it up. we came to your fund-raising event in december. jake was there. and you built a field here in florida, inhis name, in his hometown.
>> that's right. >> his reaction, when you honored him thatnight, was outstanding. >> there's not very many times that you getto hold secrets from people for a year. we kept that secret from jake owen for oneyear. and it was a great reaction at the foundationevent. >> i joked earlier about the fact that thisrace is going to go into the darkness, because of those two extended red flags. and the drivers obviously weren't prepared-- here you see the sun. but brad starting to make some changes tohis helmet here.
is he preparing for darkness and running atnight? is this just because of where the sun is settingover in turn one? >> it looks to me he wanted to cover up hissponsor logo. i don't know what was going on with that tape. but it gets bright. so unlike a nascar racer, right? we're all about our sponsor logos. >> i think elliott sadler has been a magnettoday for the race lead. restarted back in seventh at stage two.
already second here as we look at the greenflag once again. >> michael and kevin know full well the importanceof driver comfort during a race. at the beginning of the show, we documentedit, elliott sadler's cool air system was not functioning. well, he was beating on the switch, finallygot the a/c system working. he was concerned if he shut it off, it wouldn'trestart. so he was also concerned about draining thatbattery. all good. >> so far it has been a really good afternoonfor elliott sadler.
what do you think, jamie? >> ty dillon said we've got to get to thefront. i'll get aggressive and make it happen. he wanted to hook up with his brother in the2. they are close to each other now. he said, guys, i can't push. he needs to push me. they want to get together and get the 11 inthe mix as well. >> william byron in the top ten after he hadthe bad pit stop at the start of the race.
he sustained damage in the right side of thecar. the team telling him it will be a little bitof a longer stop later in the race. they'll have a tough time getting a jack underthe right side of the car. >> he didn't have a very good restart. back a few spots. everything he sees and does is a learningexperience. and you see liberty university there on the9 car. not only is he a race car driver, but he'sa college student as well. he went to high school with my daughter, macy,as a matter of fact.
>> first semester at liberty, taking classeson campus, living in the dorm. i know you had the opportunity to visit him, michael. second semester because of the racing commitments. he's now doing classes online. he's taking about ten hours. that's a good way to balance the on-trackand off-track and get an education while you're going to school on the weekend. >> mike, this is just going to be one of thoseraces that everybody in this race that's still running is going to remember.
remember that race we ran like four hours? wrecked three-quarters of the field? we finished fifth. >> the pace car has his headlights on. that tells you we're getting toward dark here. >> we go green as we complete lap 12 in thissecond stage of daytona international speedway. >> remember, brendan was involved in the earlierwreck. had to do repairs on the 62 car. elliott sadler like you said hunting thatlead all day long.
>> how does that feel when you win here before? when you know you've just got "the" car? what are you trying to accomplish? having it in the first position the wholeday? >> i call it the 88 effect. like dale jr. when he goes around the top of the racetrack, the whole field wants to follow you. that's what the fast car is like. once everybody figures that out, this eallwant to follow you because they feel that
will better your position as the day goes. >> rcr has five full-time entries in 2017in the xfinity series. two of those are gone, jones and hemric wreckedout early in the race. dillon brothers back around tenth. gaughan leading lapse for rc. >> remember when we thought that 2 car wastoo tore up to race? now he's up on the outside. >> if we have enough tires to get to the finish, they could win the race, that 2 team. they're fighting their way back to the fronton the high side.
>> i'll tell you, austin has had a day. that team has had a day. fighting through the rough times, and he andyounger brother ty starting to make it happen in the outside lane as they go to turn three. >> it doesn't look like wrecking 27 of the40 cars affects these guys. they're still going after it pretty good. >> elliott sadler moved up high to get infront of kasey kahne. thought that might be the run had needed toget the lead. brendan gaughan trying to keep his 62 carout front.
>> i told you earlier, benny gordon went tothe garage after the last incident. he made the trip to the care center, got checkedout. he's been released and is okay. >> a couple of things that are happening thatwill help the 2 car, dillon, is the sun setting. this track is sensitive to the heat. when the sun shines on it, it's slicker, right, kevin? >> yeah, i think as the sun goes down, i thinkthe cars will consistently become better to drive and easier to be aggressive. i think there will be more tire strategy andthings as we get to the end of the race.
i think everybody knows now that the handlingis going to start to get better as the sun is going down. >> a couple of years ago we were here, youwere rel brating ryan reed's success, from bakersfield, california. >> he's definitely had a lot of success hereat daytona. i was fortunate to sit up here in the boothand be a part of calling his first win here at daytona. he's been up front all day. >> we're halfway through stage number two.
what do you see, larry mac? >> i think we continue to monitor austin dillonin the 2 car tire situation. remember, four sets for the weekend. they had that set taken away from them, thatleft them with three. i've got a program down here that tells mewhat they do on each pit stop. they have made five stops. they've changed left sides once. and four tires twice. obviously the math does not add up there.
so i think what's going on is these teamsare regluing up tires. nascar doesn't care how many times you usethem. but they're regluing up a lot of tires thatdidn't have a lot of laps and maybe trying to hold on to the fresh set of rights towardthe end of the race. >> a lot to manage today, larry. justin alexander leads group. he's in eighth right now. to help educate you on how we're doing businesswith this new format in 2017, elliott sadler scored in the second position, but highlightedin green with the s1, already picked up ten
points for the regular season and one play-offpoint that will go toward the postseason when we get to september. >> hunt in the lead again. running on the outside. looks like he's going to make his way besidebrendan gaughan. >> we talked on the prerace show about theyoung guns versus the veterans. cool to see a couple of vets in elliott sadlerand brendan gaughan leading the field. >> brendan gaughan finished in the top tenof every plate race a year ago. maybe we shouldn't be surprised that that62 is up there, and very, very competitive.
north of 40 years old out of las vegas, nevada. he and crew chief shane wilkins spent a lotof time together in nascar at all levels. larry, just talking about the tires and howthey're managing them in the 2 camp. what are they talking about, matt? >> we told you earlier that the team was petitioningnascar for two replacement tires. they found issue with those that they feltlike could be issues as far as unsafe. so nascar deemed that a brand-new set thatthey gave the 2. >> that's nice. that worked out good for them.
because they need them. >> you don't see that every day. but if it is a safety issue, nascar will alwaysmake sure that you having you need to be safe. and that was the decision. >> i think it's much trash, as many timesas everybody spun out, there are probably other cars on pit road that have gotten thesame, you know, thing from nascar with another set of tires. >> a little more tame. in our second stage of the afternoon.
a few less cars in that lead draft. those that have been eliminated with the earliercrashes. but one thing that has not changed, the guyout front, elliott sadler, has now led 21 laps today, the most of anybody. 11 to go in the second stage. >> that's an expert right there. that's brad keselowski, he's pushing on theback of the 9 of william byron. he gets off of him when he cease william getout of control. something happened to william.
has he got an issue? looks like he's coming to the pit. >> bring it on down. >> tough break for driver 9. >> he's done some good things after a roughstart this afternoon. dropping mightily with an engine that he believesis about to expire. >> that's interesting. that's a tough day when you miss all the wrecks, and you have a car that you can win with, and then you have something, a mechanicalssuetake you out.
>> kasey kahne to the bottom. >> i tell you what, that 88 car is fast. he's been pretty dedicated to elliott sadler'sbumper for most of the day. you see him making moves. he's worked his way back to the front everytime he's been shuffled back a little bit. he'll be push, and it will be interestingto see how his car leads if he gets out front. >> william byron started to drop back. the one guy noticed going by. the first year driver for chip ganassi racinghas served notice that he is just fine, thank
you very much. and he might be a player late here at daytona. what's the latest with william byron, chris? >> william byron and his crew chief on theradio, going through reset phases with the car, trying to figure out if it's a possiblebattery issue, going back between the primary and secondary. doesn't seem that's the issue. now he's telling him to come to pit lane andwe'll look under the hood. >> we talked about the five-minute clock andif you go to the garage after an accident
you're eliminated. this is mechanical. anything they do with william here, they canreturn to the racetrack, if they're able to get it fixed. >> usually if there's a cylinder or somethingto do with the engine, you'll see a little bit of smoke. there's no smoke. so maybe it is a battery or electronic issuethat they can cure. >> the one thing about the engines when youcome to these restrictor pla it racetracks,
they're pushed to the absolute max on everythingfrom the top to the bottom. one more power makes a difference. it could be battery, it could be somethinglike that that they can't fix. sometimes when you have some engine trouble,it's easy to do here, because they are pushed so far to the max to try to get the most horsepowerout of them. >> remember when ty dillon said i want topush my brother to get to the front? i think mission accomplished. >> seven laps to go here in stage two. elliott sadler leads.
behind him, an rcr -->> the battery's dead. >> this is where experience comes in. i think as you look at being in the car alot, as william gets more experienced, he'll be able to analyze those things a little betteras to what is actually wrong. the battery is dead. >> in the truck, he was dominating. his water temperature light was flashing andflashing. we wondered good they thought they were inthe boundaries of not having a problem. then the engine failed.
he's getting a big lesson lately on what thegauges mean and how you need to react to them. >> how about the fact we're in the longestgreen flag stretch of the day. right now at 12 laps. >> it's very fortunate. >> i also think it's interesting that theseguys are strung around the top of the racetrack, and have broken away. there's like three drafts on the racetrackright now. >> if you're into numerology, cars 1, 2, 3,running first, second and third. here's ty dillon.
>> two to go. sizing him up. >> got a couple of xfinity regulars runningthird and fourth. and a couple of monster energy nascar cupguys. good things up toward the front. >> look at blake cook, though. he's in fourth. they have taped up the hood of that car, anda couple of cars behind him. michael annett driving for junior motorsports.
a lot of damage on the front end. but they have been able to withstand the five-minuteclock on a couple of occasions of the and very much in the game. five laps to go here in our second stage. >> more importantly, the 2, the 3, 11, 52,they all came out of the rcr stable there to work together. >> do you think they'll make quick work ofthe 1 car as we come down to the end of the stage? >> any strategy games going to play out hereat the end of stage two, larry?
>> you know, as we're five laps to go, fourlaps to go to end stage two, you talk about blake cook being a huge part. don't forget about the other xfinity seriesregular part of the rcr group, brendan gaughan in the 62. i see the inside line starting to make a movenow. it's going to kind of jumble everything uphere in a minute. >> larry, i want to point something out. in the high lane, talking about the 5 of michaelannett, doing a nice job in the draft with damage, but he is one lap down currently inposition to get the free pass.
and we're going to get a caution here in aminute at the end of this stage. that would put him back on the lead lap witheverybody else. >> i talked about how meticulously these crewsbuild these cars, look at that, he's up in the lead pack and he doesn't have a rightfender. how did that happen. >> he has a few years in the xfinity series. he announced he was coming back driving fora great team in junior motorsports. i guess you could say they're off to a goodstart. they're not having a perfect day, but thefact that he's still out there racing with
everything we dealt with today, that's a positivesign. >> kevin, you might call your crew chief andsay, rodney, i think about a 16th of tow or little bit of wedge. i need a fender and i think i could win thisthing. >> i think the next time he's at talladegaor daytona and asks for the little bit of the toe adjustment, they'll say, rememberwhen you didn't have the right front fender in the daytona 500? just keep driving it. >> i thought elliott sadler was going to cruiseto a stage two win.
ryan reed made a rally in that inside lane. sadler had to drop down and block him. two laps to go in the stage. we've closed pit road and a shootout in frontto determine who is going to get the green/white checkered. >> we didn't have stage racing, i don't thinkyou would be seeing this side-by-side rally. reed said, i need some regular season points. i'm going to the front! oh, no!
>> crash. do not lift yet. do not lift. okay. back it down, brother. >> brad keselowski got into the back of brennanpoole in the bump draft and it went wrong. i talked earlier about how precisely keselowskiwas pushing on william byron. trying to figure out how though happened. >> that's a tough break for ryan reed whowas positioning himself to make a run at a
stage victory. but as the caution comes out, one lap to goin stage two, it certainly would appear that once again it's going to be elliott sadlerthat wins a stage. and when i said green/white checkered, i wasreferring to the green/white checkered indicating the end of the stage. here's what brought out the caution. >> bam. >> with the experience of brad keselowski, kevin, did you see anything there that makes you think that that wasn't just typical bumpersnot matching up?
bump drafting that went wrong? >> a little bit offcenter. with these cars you have to have them deadcenter. a little bit to the right. it just turned him to the right. >> that's how hard it is to do the bump drafting. we've watched brad do it a few laps earlier. now it's resulted in just a little bit ofa mistake there. just by the cars being off of alignment bysix inches.
it just doesn't take much. >> brennan poole comes down pit road. certainly placed on the five-minute clock. opening stage today, won by elliott sadlerunder caution. the same will happen here. in stage number two. look at the top five, austin dillon is behindsadler, ryan reed is third, ty dillon, brad keselowski, kasey kahne, tyler reddick andharrison rhodes, your top ten. >> it's been a long time since i've seen arace like this, that was so consistently having
some issues throughout the whole race. and, you know, where we're just at the endof the second stage here. >> rookies, veterans, everybody's making mistakesit seems. it's not just the young guys. >> under caution for the sixth time today. second time in stage two. cook and poole get together. music: 'the best things in life are free'by sam cooke as dawn breaks across this majestic land...

but i don't know, i just gave him a simplepush and it took off on him. >> we were watching the replay, what was weird, you hit him square. the minute you hit him, it picked his rearend up. why did you hit him. it was really weird. you didn't hit him hard at all. we saw it on the replay. >> pit road closed that time around. that's why no one was able to come down.
an unfortunate end to the end of the afternoonfor brennan poole. he goes to the garage. reminding everyone, if you're just joiningus, once you go to the garage in nascar now, if it's for an accident, you have been eliminatedfrom competition. so we're on now to stage three. and before we get there, some pit stops, larry,i'm sure. how do you see strategy playing out basedon the numbers? >> it's getting interesting. we did run 20 laps of green flag racing sincethey were last on pit road.
i'm looking at drivers like elliott sadlerand austin and ty dillon. i've got to believe they're going to fillthat thing up with fuel, probably, i would get four tires right here. and that way, you know you still have to stopone more time. but if it did stay green, all you would needis a splash of fuel at the end to get to the checkered flag. >> update on strategy there from larry mcreynolds. you know who loves this new format? elliott sadler.
he's batting a thousand right now. >> i love larry mac, because he's my kindof crew chief. just put four tires on it. that's what i want as a driver. >> in the xfinity series, they limit yourtires. larry mac might want to put four tires onfor you, but he might not have them. >> this day couldn't have gone any betterfor elliott. spent a lot of time in the front. even the one time that he drifted back afterpitting at the end of stage one when guys
stayed out, he was quickly able to work hisway back up inside the top three. eventually got the lead. he's now won our first two stages. as you see the guys working on the fence overin turns three and four. >> you know, that's a couple of things, adam. obviously a fast car. elliott sadler has a really fast car. but also, he just positioned himself perfectlyall day long with the right guys behind him and made all the right moves.
that's an experienced veteran with a lot ofability at a place like this and a great car. >> there you go. he's got a lot of ability and a great car. i this i he's proven that year after yearno matter what he's driven. and i think junior motorsports brings goodcars to the track. >> that doesn't hurt. others who challenged him find themselvesin the garage and their day is over. chris neville. >> kind of around the top five, top ten allday.
right now running in the top five again. he's saying later in the run, that car gettingway too nervous. he wants to settle down. >> elliott sadler, gas man said good, rightside tires. four-tire change on the 2 car of austin dillon. he's just trying to be patient. >> ty dillon told his team handling is goodon this car. i just can't push. let's stick with the four tires.
>> a couple of the guys who got two tires, jamie, looked like they were really accelerating as they exited pit lane. we'll see if anybody was going too fast. there you saw the numbers as drivers leftpit road, if they took two tires or four. a tire gets away. it belongs to austin dillon. that means a penalty is coming. oh, i'm sorry. i thought it went to the 2 car.
it did not. he will not be penalized. we'll find out who it did belong to. it was the 4 of chastain. >> i think the team talking with him rightnow. let's see if we can get in the car there. austin, this is mike and kevin up in the fs1booth. you got a second to chat? >> yes, sir, i'm here.
>> you've had a heck of a day. tire issues. a crash. what else has gone on? what all you going there out there? and you're up front. it's been a wild one so far. but proud of these guys that built a fastcar and we were able to make some moves there. they fixed the damage well.
we've got a chance to win this thing, that'sall you can ask for. >> austin, this is kevin. i just want to know, first off, you'll getout of this car and say, my goodness, i can't believe it. >> i'm a little bit free in the tri-oval anda little free on entry. but it's fast that way. hopefully we can keep up with it that way. and hopefully me and ty can make it happen. >> man, you'll see why it's loose when youget out.
i promise you that. you're doing a great job. >> kevin, usually you have a right fenderto lean on. you don't have one. >> we're past halfway in the season openerat daytona. it's over. i've found a permanent escape from monotony. together, we are perfectly balanced. our senses awake.

matt, we're about to go to stage three. austin dillon has a really good spot. >> they've certainly seen it all today. multitasking a number of different issues. looking at the track temperature startingto come down. do you feel like the track is going to stabilizesomewhat? >> i think so. we've been through a lot today. everybody on the chevy is doing an awesomejob.
we've been through it all today. but the track is cooling down. i think it will help us. we're a little bit of a tire situation here,so we'll see how it goes. but with all these cautions, we're not runningmany laps on tires. i don't know, we'll see how it's doing. we'll see what it does. >> adam? >> austin dillon going to restart sixth.
one of the other double-duty guys, brad keselowskiwill be third when the green flag goes back in the air. >> i think the grand stands are going to blockthe sun. you might keep your helmet like that. the worst is going to be the sunshine offof 4. >> joey meyer, giving some thoughts to driverbrad keselowski. front row as we go back green. sadler, reed, behind them brad keselowski. >> do coat a up in the top five.
i love these plate races. look at kumper in eighth place. >> dakoda has been right there. it's not like, since we had the second accident, not like he fell back, or made any mistakes. he's been in the mix the whole time. >> he's starting to think daytona victory, isn't he. ride ar reed a couple of years ago. >> in the mix all afternoon. green flag once again.
final stage of the day. this one takes us to that checkered flag. and the huge payout, and the celebration thatcomes with winning at this storied track, daytona international speedway. >> and how confident is brad keselowski aboutgoing up there, pounding in the back of elliott sadler. he just wrecked a guy by doing that. >> i think that's what makes good race cardrivers good race car drivers. mentally, while you're sitting in that car,you have to be able to overcome those things
and move on, and fix those problems afterthe race. and then after that, you go back after it. >> elliott sadler out front. we talked today about how successful juniormotorsports has been at daytona. brad keselowski behind him in the 22. would you believe team penske has never wonhere in the xfinity series? that 22 car didn't win at all a year ago. you know brad is really hungry. changed both of those stats.
>> as much as roger penske has raced aroundthe world, you tell me he hasn't won somewhere? it's hard to believe. >> why wouldn't we have a caution. >> seventh caution of the afternoon. first here in our final stage. >> blake koch has a flat left front. i'm sure that's what the problem is. over the line. he needs to back up.
beautiful day in daytona. >> yes, it is. more beautiful for some than others, right? the good news is, we're going to get to seethe beautiful afternoon, the beautiful evening. and the sunset. >> we are. we're going to get to see this race changecomplexions, because these cars will drive differently as that sun sets. while elliott sadler has been dominant, whocan sneak up there and cause some problems.
>> i'm starting to feel liking it today. as dawn breaks across this majestic land... >>> final stage at the nascar xfinity series. everything they learn, making tires for thegrueling demands of nascar inspires what rolls into yours, goodyear, the official tire ofnascar. 53 laps to go. austin dillon is the race leader. elliott sadler behind him. 2 for 2 today.
brendan gaughan, aric almirola and brad keselowskiwho is in a beatup race car. despite that, finds himself inside the topfive for the stretch run. let's take a look at how our spotters arehelping the drivers on track. you know, when you have a good spotter, asa driver you worry less. joey meyers delivering big-time today. >> lane's open. back up, back up, back up. easy, easy, easy. middle, middle, right corner.
back it down. middle lane's clear. nice job. >> there you see brad keselowski driving upthrough the accident. joey meyer doing an outstanding job. he helped his driver, brad keselowski, worryless with the liberty mutual insurance spotter coverage. >> joey's one of the best in the business. oh, oh, whoa, whoa!
okay, good job, you're on your way. >> glad i could help you out. i know you're worrying much less now. >> i heard a good explanation from one ofthe shows you guys did about the spotters. i can't remember who was saying it, but itsays, our job is to paint a picture. that's really what they do. they're painting a picture in your mind what'shappening around you and how it's going. >> the reason why is because with the spoilersand all the windshield and the way you're stuck down in those cars, you can't see what'sgoing on up there.
you need somebody to draw that picture foryou, then you can work your way through that mess. >> can you believe we've still got over 50laps to go in this thing? >> it's anybody's guess what we're going tosee at the end of this thing. >> i think had will be interesting when thesun sets how these cars changes. and will elliott sadler have the best carwhen it gets a little bit darker. >> the thing about this, the sun sets, lightsgo on, track temp starts to cool down. how much does that help the fact that tireswe know can be a little bit worn in the latter stages?
>> it will be interesting to watch these guysdeal with those. we've got a whole bunch of family up herein the booth today. >> macy's gear. >> so many producers. >> giving a lot of direction. i can promise you that. >> if i keep screwing up, i'll just give theheadset to him and let him tell people about the race. you guys want to take over?
>> now, wait a minute, here. >> i like them a lot but you're hanging meout a little bit. you've been my wingmen so far. >> it's always been about family. he's been in the garage area ever since theywere born. it's cool to be able to spend time with yourfamily at the races. that's why i love the new stadium here atthe daytona international speedway. you see a lot of kids, and moms and dads walkingaround enjoying this wonderful event. eating nachos.
>> the crowd has been awesome all week herein daytona. >> and last night for the truck series raceit was really good. >> so there's william byron. got involved in some issues early. and then had that problem on pit road. the battery that went away. chris, what's the latest on the rookie fromcharlotte? >> down two laps, now just down one lap. we saw the team initially start to changethe battery, then they put the left rear tire
back on. what they figured out was the primary batterythat went down. the way the switches work in the car, youcan be on the primary battery, the primary and secondary battery, or the secondary battery. when you switch over to the secondary batteryhe didn't take the switch all the way over there. once he switched over to the secondary, that'swhen it was running well. just new to the car, learning the system. he's a rookie.
>> great news, though. one lap down. the first guy in that category. should we get another caution, he puts himselfback on the lead lap. he would be very much in play in the finalstage. >> absolutely. they're very fortunate to be in the scenariowhere there's a lot of crashed cars. not very many cars that are on the racetrack. he's got an opportunity to get back in thisrace.
>> disappointing ending for brendan poole. >> just to know, the new protocol from nascarthis year, even if a driver drives back to the garage, they still have to go to the infieldcare center to be checked out. that's exactly what happened. you're okay. so the incident, the 22, we heard the spotter, talking about their point of view. >> we had a really good plan, first of all. all of us kind of teamed up on the spottersup there and planned to get to the front. it was working out really well for us.
so, you know, it's just one of those things, you're trying to do all you can, the spot right before the corner there, he just waspushing me. it just turned me. there's nothing you can do. i don't think it was intentional. it was just trying to get the bonus points. everything was planned out well. we got some bonus points in the first stage. we were in a great spot for the second stage.
we felt like we had a great race car today. i'm proud of the team and all the effort that'sgone into it. i'm looking forward to the rest of them. >> we'll go to atlanta and see the stage racingagain. are you learning as you go? do you have an idea moving on to the nextrace what you can do differently? >> you have to qualify good. that was what helped us out today. we started up front.
we wanted to stay up front and get the bonuspoints. you have to qualify good and run in the topten to get the bonus points. unfortunately the day ended quick today. but compliments to my guys and team that we'llhave a good day in atlanta. >> thank you, jamie. caution number seven, cleaned up at daytona. pace car going to hit pit road. leader on the inside. elliott sadler to his right.
>> you know, adam, if you weren't a fan ofthe damaged vehicle policy, let me give you a heads-up, six of the top ten have been involvedin wrecks and they're still challenging for the win here at daytona. >> the crews can work fast. aric almirola, all of a sudden he has surfaced. second car in the outside lane. the 98 behind elliott sadler. >> got her done last july here, huh? >> yes, he did.
one of the guys in the cup level in the 43car. richard petty won in the 43. aric almirola, pulled an upset driving forthe king here in the summer of 2014. >> listen to that thing wind out. >> a little bit of a sniff of a draft up ahead. >> that's that pack forming back together. you can hear it in the engine. like you say, it starts to come alive, thenext thing you know the packs are getting tighter and tighter and pushing and shoving.
>> 489 to go. 49 to go. when does the urgency really pick up, andthat green light go on for a driver? >> apparently it was the last one today. >> it seems like we've had the urgency allday. after all of these restarts, you keep seeingthe bumping and the pushing and the shoving. it hasn't slowed anybody down. even though we've had two huge wrecks. i think as it gets closer to the end, i stillthink that you're going to see that ratchet
up even more. >> lap one last night in the truck race, too. maybe these guys are just ready to get afterit at daytona. >> you guys really helped me out there, youknow that? >> can we put keelan on, please? >> look at this. that's such a cool view. >> nice mix up there at the front. >> harrison rhodes, the fourth car in theoutside lane.
he's not a lap down. scoring in the six position right now. >> two cars a long way out there. these cars get built up there, they have agood opportunity to try to pass the lead. >> sadler showing all day long. he wants to load that race. he took a chance and went to the outside. he knows he's going to have help behind him. >> here comes almirola.
>> that's a power move. he won both segments from the front. he thinks that time he's going to win therace being out front. but he's not going to get that right now. >> in the low lane, brendan gaughan, pushingthe deuce of austin dillon back out front. >> every time that 2 car goes by in the lead,i look at the right rear quarter panel and think, that car has been in a major accidenthere today and he's leading that race. >> it's bent over to the left. if you're at daytona, that means a littlebit more speed maybe.
but golly, it's got to be hard to handle. he's doing a great job of hanging on to it. >> you know whose name we haven't called? the 14 of j.j. yeley doing an outstanding job this afternoonfor tristar motorsports. >> tyler reddick is in the top ten. >> free pass, and making the most of it. >> we're seeing a lot of sparks out of elliottsadler's car. that might be one of the reasons why his caris so fast.
because it appears to be traveling a longway. he's definitely starting to put on a littlespark show out there, adam. >> part of that, i'm sure, is the fact thatthe sun is setting and the sparks becoming much more visible. >> we watched michael annett get back on thelead lap. he's in the 15th position in the 5 car. he's found his way back into contention. but look at that hood. it's starting to flap a little bit there.
i don't know if it will hang on or not. the air catches that off of the other cars,it might rip it off of there. >> coming in today's race, there were fourdrivers entered that won at daytona. all four still alive going for a second running, inside the top seven. 45 laps to go. now 44 as they head back to turn one. >> you can hear it -- as he was coming upoff the corner, he knew that the momentum that he had was going to take him to the backof the 62 car. i think they've all learned where coming offthe corner, going into the corner, you definitely
don't want to be on the guy in front of you'sback bumper and cause another accident. >> how good has that got to feel for harrisonrhodes, some of the young guys that don't get to the front very often, to be in themiddle of the mix. like you said, adam, with four guys that havewon here at daytona before. >> first car by william byron. in the free pass position should we get acaution. ryan finds himself inside the top 12. >>ing number 19. >> kissed it a little bit.
eighth one of the day. >> nice job keeping it off the wall. fire it up if you can. left rear tire is down. >> i think a lot of these tire troubles, theseare from the fenders rubbing the tires and cutting them down. >> rookie for joe gibbs racing, 13 when hehad the tire issue. >> wow, how about that. right in his lap.
>> maybe try putting some tape on that hood. >> you see the tire blow right there. >> nice evasive move by michael annett to get around matt tifft. >> you can see the tire, it's already -- it'spretty early in the corner right there. man, those are great shots, to see the sparksand the tires and everything. >> did you see that truck of matt craftonlast night? it looked like the movie "twister." it went right up in the air. the fox sports 1 cameras were all over it.
those are dramatic pictures. >> all right, crew chief, 42 laps to go. >> we've only run seven laps, seven agreeflag laps since we pitted. we're well inside the fuel window right now. this is why i like what austin and ty dillondid on the last pit stop. they get four. i think you top it off with fuel, especiallyif you're two of the three. at least you know you can get to the end. i think they're going to have to almost gothe same route, because track position is
still going to be king. >> yeah, we've only seen a few guys, larry, that have been able to push from the back all the way to the front. there's been guys get up to the second row,or third row. getting the rest of the way is really tough. we saw elliott sadler trying to make the pass. he knows how important the front positionis. >> i didn't know there was anyone in thiscategory, about you one-fourth of the field today has been able to avoid incident so far.
pit road is open. larry said they will come and at least getfuel and they're doing exactly that. >> brad keselowski, a little bit of tape onthe grill and he said we had really good speed on the last run. you see no tires. >> three to four seconds of fuel, that willbe the call. the 62 of brendan gaughan is away. >> brad keselowski was motoring down thatoutside of pit road, wasn't he. almost had two tires off in the grass.
>> you've got cars weaving in, weaving out, going slow, slowing down, speeding up. it looks pretty chaotic from up here. >> we haven't had a speeding penalty heretoday, which is somewhat surprising, when you consider we had eight in this race a yearago. 41 to go at daytona. once upon a time a girl with golden locksbroke into a house owned by three bears. she ate some porridge, broke the baby bear'schair, and stole some jewelry, a flat-screen tv, and a laptop. luckily the geico insurance agency had helpedthe bears with homeowners insurance.
they were able to replace all their items... ...including a new chair from crate and barrel. call geico and see how easy it is to switchand save on homeowners insurance. >>> a lot of cautions but a lot of excitement. the monster energy super cross catches airin atlanta. don't miss that. monster energy super cross coming up on fs1. >> we're looking forward to that, shannon. first, though, we've got a great finish cominghere.
40 laps to go. we just added william byron back to the mix. >> the wa ef-around there. the young man had a battery issue. wasn't sure how to fix this onboard. they got it done in the pits. now he's back in competition. free pass with scott lagasse. >> we get with 39 to go, aric almirola, sadlerbehind him.
some of the underdogs up front, dakoda armstrong, harrison. all in the top ten for this restart. >> you really want to watch elliott sadlerhere and how he handles the track. >> the outside line is really solid on thestart. good jump. >> then you've got to make some decisions. >> and that's strange. it's like, you know, it's been very consistentall day, the outside line is the place you want to be on the restart.
it will be interesting to see if the guyspick the outside line if we have another caution later in the day. >> you pick a line, you like who's behindyou is in. it looks like consistently, like you said, kevin, every time they take off on the outside they get the jump. >> i still can't believe the 2 and 22 arestill where they are in the race when you consider what they've been through. >> that's a great view of that right reardamage there. i think you're right, mikey, i think thatcar might have a little bit of things bent
the right way to help it gain some speed. it might be hard to drive, but it sure isgoing fast. >> if he can hang on to it, it could givehim a slight advantage. we'll see how it turns out. >> the ford in the outside lane. ryan reed up behind him. elliott sadler is going, man. >> i don't know about that push there. there wasn't anywhere to go, man.
>> i think we've definitely learned one thingtoday. these cars don't push -- they push very easily, but they aren't near as stable when they're pushing. i think the later this race goes, the moreyou start to push, the more opportunity that i think it's going to have to shoot one outof the pack and cause another accident. >> we definitely have enough cars left tocause a big crash. >> i don't know if they'll have enough tapeleft to fix any more, though. >> elliott sadler, so much time out in front. now boxed in a little bit.
level of frustration at this stage, what doyou think? >> it looked like it was pretty high whenhe was pushing ryan reed so hard. he knows he's got one of the best cars inthe field. and run some laps, log some laps. >> you can tell he's being aggressive. coming down to get a little bit of a sniffof a side draft here. >> push, push, push, push. >> so he knows he has a really fast car. he wants to position it back at the frontof the pack.
because had efeels like he has the best car. that's probably the safest place. >> what kind of money could we have won inlas vegas if we had said that dakoda arm strong was going to be the top toyota with 36 lapsto go? >> a lot. >> if with could have gotten somebody to takeit. i think we'd have trouble convincing anyonethat could happen. >> there's still a lot of movement still. >> adam, these are realistic options of winnersof this race.
dakoda armstrong, look right behind him, youhave the 01 car of rhodes there. these guys are in the mix. they have a shot to win this race. >> i think that sadler's going to maybe haveto try to jump around ryan reed. those two cars together just aren't makingany progress. maybe sadler gets around reed. three wide possibly. >> how dangerous is that, though, to get shuffledout at this stage. >> sometimes you just have to take a chance.
as you take a look at elliott, he's as aggressiveas anybody we've seen all day, the 16 car trying to get him to the front. sometimes when you have the fastest car andthey pull out, they leave the guy hung in the middle. >> william byron, with the wave-around underthe last caution, has worked his way back inside the top 15. got another helper on the high lane. >> look at dillon go. he just shoots ahead of keselowski.
>> man, those are some good pictures. here they come again. surging back forward. >> five of the top six in the running orderright now will be competing tomorrow. in the daytona 500. the only one that doesn't fit that category, driver 16, ryan reed. >> there's no surprise, right? the guys racing sunday are really good. and they're proving it.
>> it's so interesting to me when you seethe energy of the outside line and the inside line. there's really no rhyme or reason to it, michael. it's like it builds, builds, builds, and it doesn't matter if it's the bottom or the top. all of a sudden the front car comes shooting by the leader. >> the big push.
>> now, remember, adam, these cars can't locktogether -- there it goes! he was able to give a nice p ush
